Best first-date restaurants in Seoul 2026

A first-date restaurant in Seoul has one job: keep the conversation going. That rules out the long, performative three-star tastings and the loudest Hanwoo barbecue rooms, and it rewards intimate dining rooms, warm lighting and a clear bill. The seven tables below are the ones we can stand behind — every chef, signature dish, price and address is verified against the MICHELIN Guide, Asia’s 50 Best and each restaurant’s own listings.

They split into two groups: Michelin-starred dining rooms that happen to be calm enough for a date, and the wine bar and bistros that win on charm and value. After the picks, we name the famous Seoul rooms that are a mistake for a first meeting. The Korean dinner clock runs early — book around 19:00 to 19:30.

Michelin rooms calibrated for two

Four starred rooms that stay quiet enough to talk. They range from Kwon Sook Soo’s two-star serenity to the affordable one-star lunch at Zero Complex, so you can match the table to how much of a statement you want to make.

#1

Kwon Sook Soo

Modern Korean · Apgujeong · 2 Michelin stars

First Date
The serene two-star room Michelin itself flags for intimate dinners — the strongest first-date table in the city.

Chef Kwon Woo-joong runs a quiet, refined dining room that the Michelin Guide singles out as ideal for intimate gatherings, which is exactly what a first date needs. The daily heritage-kimchi cart and the shrimp-stuffed fried courgette blossom with pine-nut sauce give the table something to talk about. A lunch tasting runs about ₩270,000; it has held two Michelin stars (2026) since opening in 2014. Book the earlier seating and let the room do the work.

#2

Zero Complex

Contemporary · Seobinggo · 1 Michelin star

First Date
The most date-affordable of the city's starred rooms — calm, minimalist and explicitly romantic.

Chef Lee Choong-hu was the youngest starred chef in Seoul's first Michelin guide and has held a star since 2017. The monthly prix fixe turns on dishes like Pacific geoduck with chewy barley, sea spaghetti and a sea-mustard mousse. A six-course lunch is ₩75,000 and an eight-course dinner ₩130,000, which makes a starred first date painless. The minimalist room in the Seobinggo ‘Little France’ enclave stays quiet enough to talk.

#3

L'Amant Secret

French-Korean · Jung-gu · 1 Michelin star

First Date
The most overtly romantic room on the list — velvet, low light and quiet jazz inside the L'Escape Hotel.

Chef Son Jong-won cooks a French-Korean tasting in an intimate, Parisian-styled room at the L'Escape Hotel near Myeongdong — soft light, velvet and low jazz rather than a loud rooftop. Michelin lists it among South Korea's most romantic restaurants, and it has held a star since around 2021 (opened 2018). A set dinner runs about ₩150,000. It is the choice when the point of the evening is the mood.

#4

Onjium

Royal-court Korean · Seochon · 1 Michelin star

First Date
Royal-court cooking and palace views — a first date with a built-in conversation.

Chef Cho Eun-hee cooks Korean royal-court cuisine rooted in research into historical recipes, and the house-fermented soy, soybean and chilli pastes are the cornerstone of the menu. The light-filled room sits by the Gyeongbokgung palace wall in Seochon, with a chef's counter and palace views. It holds one Michelin star and ranked No. 10 on Asia's 50 Best in 2025; lunch tastings start at roughly US$116. The architecture and the food are both part of the date.

Wine bar and charming bistros

Three non-starred rooms that win on intimacy and value: Seoul’s first natural wine bar, a handmade-Italian bistro and a Bib Gourmand Thai kitchen. These are the low-stakes, high-charm options when a tasting menu feels like too much.

#5

Bar Big Lights

Natural wine · Hannam · opened 2017

First Date
The wine-bar slot and the most intimate seat in the city — tiny, candlelit and built around a firewood grill.

Lee Joo-hee, a pioneer of natural wine in Korea, opened Bar Big Lights in 2017 as Seoul's first natural wine bar. The signature is wood-fired abalone with smoked dried laver and an abalone-entrails sauce, matched to a deep low-intervention list; a tasting course runs ₩150,000. The candlelit room above the Fritz Hansen lounge in Hannam-dong is the strongest low-noise, high-romance fit here. One catch: reservations are by Instagram message only, so plan ahead.

#6

Borgo Hannam

Italian · Hannam · Michelin Plate 2024–25

First Date
The charming mid-range bistro — handmade Italian in a cozy Hannam room.

Chef Stefano Di Salvo, who trained at Le Gavroche in London and Eden in Italy, cooks a small handmade-Italian menu in a cozy Hannam-dong room up a short staircase. The Caldaro soup, a spicy Tuscan fisherman's style, and the spaghettini with shrimp and broccoli are the dishes to order. Michelin has listed it at Plate level in 2024 and 2025 (in the guide since 2022, opened 2020). It is the easy, warm choice when a starred room feels like too much for a first meeting.

#7

Youhan

Thai · Hannam · Michelin Bib Gourmand 2026

First Date
The casual, charming and affordable pick — Thai cooking with a natural-wine list.

Chef Kim Yu-han cooks a chic, relaxed Thai menu — house-made Thai sausage, grilled duck breast — with a natural-wine list, in the Hannam-dong alleys. It carries a Michelin Bib Gourmand (2025 into 2026), and a meal runs around ₩45,000 per person, which makes it the low-stakes, high-charm option for a first date that should not feel like a budget statement. Livelier than a dedicated wine bar, but still easy to talk in.

Not for a first date

Skip Mingles for a first date. It is Korea’s only three-Michelin-star restaurant and a remarkable meal, but the multi-hour, ten-plus-course format and the booking commitment read as anniversary-grade and a little performative when you have just met. Save it for a milestone.

Mosu Seoul, the city’s other avant-garde heavyweight (two stars in 2026), has the same problem in a different key: the tasting is a serious commitment of time and money that can overwhelm a first meeting. And the prime Cheongdam Hanwoo-barbecue rooms, while intimate, run loud and put both diners to work at the grill — better for a second or third date than a first.

How to book the right table

Reserve the starred rooms one to four weeks ahead: Kwon Sook Soo and Onjium fill fastest for weekends, while Zero Complex’s value lunch is the easiest starred seat to land. L’Amant Secret books through Catch Table. The non-starred picks are easier, with one exception — Bar Big Lights takes reservations by Instagram message only, so message a few days out.

Two practical notes. Book the earlier seating, around 19:00 to 19:30, so the room is calm rather than peaking. And if the budget matters, the Bib Gourmand Thai room Youhan (about ₩45,000 a head) or the one-star Zero Complex lunch keeps a first date considered without overplaying it. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best first-date restaurant in Seoul?

For most first dates, Kwon Sook Soo in Apgujeong is the editorial pick: a serene two-Michelin-star room that the guide itself calls ideal for intimate dinners, with a kimchi cart and courgette-blossom dish that give you something to talk about. If you want something more affordable, the one-star Zero Complex runs a six-course lunch at ₩75,000.

How much should I budget for a Seoul first date?

That varies with the register, but plan per person: a one-star lunch like Zero Complex from about ₩75,000; L'Amant Secret around ₩150,000; Kwon Sook Soo's tasting near ₩270,000. A charming non-starred option such as Borgo Hannam or the Bib Gourmand Thai room Youhan (about ₩45,000) keeps a first date relaxed and well under those figures while still feeling considered.

Is a Michelin three-star like Mingles too much for a first date?

Yes, for a genuine first date. Mingles is Korea's only three-Michelin-star restaurant, and its long, multi-course format reads as anniversary-grade and a little performative when you barely know the other person. Save it for a milestone. A shorter one-star or two-star room leaves room for conversation, which is the whole job of a first-date table.

Which Seoul neighbourhoods are best for a first date?

Hannam-dong and Yongsan hold the most date-friendly spread: chef-driven rooms, a natural-wine bar and charming bistros within a short radius. Apgujeong and Gangnam carry the polished starred rooms such as Kwon Sook Soo, while Seochon in Jongno offers Onjium's royal-court cooking with palace views. For more, see our Seoul dining guide.
