About Frieda

Frieda has held a Michelin star since 2021. It is in Gohlis, north of the centre, at Menckestrasse 48-50, and it is run by a husband-and-wife team, Lisa Angermann and Andreas Reinke. There is one menu — a regularly changing set called Frieda En Vogue, nine or ten courses for €125, with a vegetarian Frieda Naturell on request. A single nightly seating, Tuesday to Saturday. For a celebration in Leipzig that wants a starred kitchen without the hush, this is the room.

The Kitchen

Angermann and Reinke cook to one idea: let the ingredient lead and get out of its way. Michelin gave them the star in 2021 for exactly that — high-quality, ingredient-led cooking served without ceremony. The cod with ox-tongue vinaigrette, watercress and gherkin is the dish that explains the kitchen: precise, seasoned hard, no decoration for its own sake. The saddle of venison with salted celeriac, artichoke cream, pistachio and lardo is the other to watch for when the menu turns to autumn. Nine or ten courses for €125 is fair money for a one-star room, and the wine list leans into Saxon and wider German growers rather than the usual Burgundy parade. The vegetarian Frieda Naturell is not an afterthought — pre-order it and it gets the same attention as the main menu.

The Room

The dining room reads as relaxed bistro, not hushed temple — chic, uncomplicated, and easy to spend an evening in. Noise stays at conversation level; the single nightly seating keeps it personal. Tables are well spaced, lighting is low, dress is smart-casual. There is a terrace and an orangery for warmer months, and a proprietor who leads an accomplished front-of-house without hovering. It is small, so the pacing of a long menu feels like an evening rather than an endurance test.

Best for a Birthday

Book Frieda for a birthday for three reasons: a nine-course starred menu makes the night feel like an event, the relaxed room keeps it celebratory rather than solemn, and the orangery in season is the seat to request. Pre-order Frieda Naturell if the guest of honour is vegetarian. Pair it with our Leipzig dining guide, the wider best birthday restaurants, and tables to impress clients in the city.

Not for

Not for a quick weeknight bite or a large, boisterous group — Frieda is one long €125 set menu in a small room with a single seating, and it rewards people who came to sit and pay attention.

Frequently Asked

Is Frieda worth it?

Yes, if a single chef-driven set menu is what you want. Lisa Angermann and Andreas Reinke hold a Michelin star for ingredient-led cooking served without ceremony, and the €125 Frieda En Vogue runs nine or ten courses of it. For a one-star kitchen with a terrace and an orangery, it is honestly priced and far warmer than most rooms at this level.

How hard is it to book Frieda?

Plan four to eight weeks ahead. Frieda is a small room running a single nightly seating, Tuesday to Saturday, so weekend dates go first. Book direct through the restaurant website and pre-order the vegetarian Frieda Naturell when you reserve if you need it. Midweek is the easier ask. See our Leipzig dining guide for alternatives.

What should I order at Frieda?

There is one menu, so the choice is made. The line-up changes with the season, but recent standouts include cod with ox-tongue vinaigrette, watercress and gherkin, and saddle of venison with salted celeriac, artichoke cream, pistachio and lardo. Take the wine pairing; the list leans into Saxon and wider German growers.

Is Frieda good for a birthday?

Yes — a nine-course starred menu in a room that never turns stuffy is an ideal birthday format. Ask for the orangery in season, pre-order Frieda Naturell if the guest of honour is vegetarian, and book a few weeks out. See our birthday dining guide for more.
