About Krishna's Kitchen

Krishna's Kitchen is a Thai garden restaurant in the Happy Village on the hillside above the north shore of Phewa Lake, beside the paragliding landing zone that brings pilots drifting down over the water each afternoon. It has long been a favourite detour for visitors staying in Pokhara's Lakeside — a genuine Thai kitchen in the Himalayan foothills, reached by a short drive or walk up from the lake.

The Kitchen

The cooking is properly Thai, not a Nepali approximation: green papaya salad with the right sour-hot balance, fragrant tom yum and galangal soups, curries, and rice and noodle dishes built on homemade tofu and organic herbs grown on site. Vegetarians are well looked after, with most dishes made meat-free on request. By Lakeside standards it sits at the higher end — a meal for two with drinks runs into the upper-casual ($$) range — but regulars rate it among the best Thai food anywhere outside Thailand.

The Room

The draw is the garden: terraced tables on the hillside with a clear view down to Phewa Lake and the paragliders making their final descent. It is quiet, green and unhurried, a world away from the busy Lakeside strip below. Service is warm and relaxed. Come in the late afternoon to catch the gliders and the light on the water, and allow time — it is a place to sit rather than rush.

Best for solo dining

For solo dining, a relaxed first date or a quiet afternoon away from the Lakeside crowds, Krishna's Kitchen is hard to beat: the garden, the lake view and the unhurried pace do the work. A natural solo-dining and first-date spot in Pokhara.

Not for

Not for anyone short on time or wanting a quick lakeside bite — Krishna's Kitchen is a hillside garden a short trip from Lakeside, made for a slow, unhurried meal.
