About Salonika

Salonika is the dining room of the Makedonia Palace, the five-star hotel that has anchored the south end of the Thessaloniki seafront since the 1970s. It is the most formal table the hotel runs, opening onto the Thermaic Gulf, and it took back-to-back Toques d'Or as the city's top restaurant in 2020 and 2021, with a further nod from the Greek Cuisine Awards in 2022.

It sits at the dressier end of the Thessaloniki scene. For a looser night, compare the bistro cooking at Mourga, the neighbourhood plates at Maître Margarita and Deka Trapezia, or browse our seafood picks and the wider fine-dining guide.

The Kitchen

Executive chef Sotiris Evangelou cooks what he calls the cooking of the heart — Greek dishes built on produce from across Macedonia and turned with the seasons. The plates to order are the goat slow-cooked in the pot and the wine-roasted wild boar, both rooted in mountain tradition, alongside fresh fish brought in daily and finished grilled, steamed, roasted or stewed.

The kitchen pairs the food with a long Greek and international wine list, weighted toward northern Greek growers. This is hotel cooking with ambition rather than the safe buffet you might fear from a five-star address.

The Room

The room is a wide, calm hotel dining space that opens to the sea, with a terrace for warm evenings and views across the Thermaic Gulf to Mount Olympus on a clear day. Service is the polished, attentive kind a five-star hotel trains for, without being stiff.

Tables are well spaced, the lighting is low and the mood is grown-up — suited to a quiet celebration or a client dinner where the setting does some of the work.

Best for an anniversary in Thessaloniki

Salonika suits a milestone — the sea view, the polished service and the regional cooking make it a strong anniversary table or a measured spot to impress clients in Thessaloniki. For other tables in town, see To Vari Peponi or browse the full Thessaloniki dining guide.

Not for

Not for a cheap, casual or quick bite — Salonika is a dressy five-star hotel restaurant with prices to match, not a backstreet taverna for a fast plate.
